Mac, Tutorials

Are you a Mac user who wants to access hidden files on your computer? In this tutorial, we will show you how to easily reveal those hidden files in just a few simple steps. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Open the Terminal

To begin, open the Terminal application on your Mac. You can do this by going to Applications > Utilities > Terminal. The Terminal allows you to execute commands directly on your computer.

Step 2: Enter the Command

Once the Terminal is open, type the following command and press Enter:

defaults write AppleShowAllFiles true

This command modifies a hidden setting in Finder (the file manager for macOS) that determines whether or not to display hidden files. By setting it to true, we are telling Finder to show all files, including the ones marked as hidden.

Step 3: Relaunch Finder

In order for the changes to take effect, we need to relaunch Finder. To do this, hold down the Option/Alt key on your keyboard and right-click on the Finder icon in your Dock. Then, select Relaunch.

If you don’t see the Finder icon in your Dock, you can also relaunch Finder by going to Apple Menu > Force Quit, selecting “Finder” from the list of applications, and then clicking on Relaunch.

Step 4: Hidden Files Revealed!

Congratulations! You have successfully enabled the display of hidden files on your Mac. Now, when you navigate to any folder using Finder, you will be able to see all files, including those that were previously hidden.

Step 5: Disable Hidden Files (Optional)

If you want to revert back to the default behavior and hide the files again, simply open the Terminal and enter the following command:

defaults write com.finder AppleShowAllFiles false

After entering the command, remember to relaunch Finder for the changes to take effect.

Being able to access hidden files on your Mac can be useful for various purposes, such as troubleshooting or customization. By following this simple tutorial, you now have the knowledge and tools to reveal or hide hidden files on your Mac at any time.
