How to Zip a File on Mac

Compressing files into a zip format can be extremely useful when it comes to reducing file size and transferring multiple files in one go. Fortunately, Mac provides a built-in feature that allows you to easily create zip files without the need for additional software. In this tutorial, we will walk you through the step-by-step process of zipping files on a Mac.

Step 1: Select the Files

First, locate and select the files or folders you want to include in your zip file. You can choose multiple files by holding down the Command key while clicking on each file.

Step 2: Right-click and Compress

Once you have selected all the desired files, right-click on one of them. A contextual menu will appear, displaying various options. Scroll down and hover over the “Compress” option.

Note: Alternatively, you can also find the “Compress” option in the “File” menu at the top of your screen.

Step 3: Zip File Creation

In the contextual menu or “File” menu, click on “Compress”. Mac will then create a new zip file with a .zip extension in the same location as your original files.

  • If you prefer using keyboard shortcuts, you can select the files and press Control + Click, followed by selecting “Compress” from the shortcut menu.
  • To rename your zip file, simply right-click on it and select “Rename”.
  • If you want to compress multiple folders into one zip file, create a new folder and move all the desired folders into it before following the above steps.
