How to Use F2 on Mac

Do you often find yourself needing to rename files on your Mac? Well, the F2 key can be a real time-saver when it comes to quickly renaming files. In this tutorial, we will walk you through how to use F2 on Mac to rename files effortlessly.

Step 1: Select the File

The first step is to select the file that you want to rename. To do this, simply locate the file in Finder or on your desktop and click once on it with your mouse or trackpad. The selected file will be highlighted.

Step 2: Press F2

Once you have selected the file, it’s time to use the F2 key. On a Mac keyboard, the F2 key is located at the top of the keyboard, above the number keys. Pressing this key will activate the file renaming mode.


If you are using a MacBook Pro with a Touch Bar, you may need to press and hold the fn key (function key) while pressing F2 in order to activate the renaming mode.

Step 3: Rename the File

With the file renaming mode activated, you can now start typing to rename your selected file. You will notice that as you type, the original filename will be replaced with your new text input.

  • Bold Text: To emphasize certain words or phrases in your new filename, use <b>your text</b>. For example, if you want to make “Important” bold in “Important Document.txt”, type <b>Important</b> Document.txt.
  • Underlined Text: If you want to underline specific words or phrases in your new filename, use <u>your text</u>. For instance, if you want to underline “Notes” in “Meeting Notes.docx”, type <u>Meeting Notes</u>.docx.

Step 4: Save the Changes

Once you have finished renaming the file, press the Enter key on your keyboard. This will save the changes and exit the file renaming mode. The file will now be saved with its new name.
