They add a touch of emotion and fun to our messages. If you’re a Mac user, you might be wondering how to type emojis on your device. In this tutorial, we’ll explore different ways to type emojis on Mac.

Using the Character Viewer

If you want access to a wide range of emojis, the Character Viewer is your go-to tool. Here’s how to access it:

  1. Click on the Apple menu at the top left corner of your screen.
  2. Select “System Preferences” from the dropdown menu.
  3. Click on “Keyboard”.
  4. Go to the “Keyboard” tab in the Keyboard preferences window.
  5. Check the box next to “Show keyboard and emoji viewers in menu bar”.
  6. Close the preferences window.
  7. Click on the new icon that appears in your menu bar, it looks like a small keyboard or emoji symbol.
  8. Select “Show Emoji & Symbols”.

Browsing and Inserting Emojis from Character Viewer

The Character Viewer allows you to browse through various categories of emojis:

  • Select a category, such as Smileys & Emotion or Animals & Nature, from the left sidebar.
  • Browse through available emojis, and click on an emoji to insert it into your text field or document.
  • Alternatively, you can use the search bar at the top of the window to find a specific emoji by keyword.

Using Keyboard Shortcuts

If you prefer using keyboard shortcuts, Mac provides a quick way to type emojis. Here’s how:

  1. Place your cursor in the text field or document where you want to insert an emoji.
  2. Press “Control + Command + Spacebar” simultaneously.
  3. The Character Viewer will appear.
  4. Select an emoji from the available options by clicking on it or using arrow keys and pressing Enter.

Creating Text Shortcuts for Emojis

You can also create custom text shortcuts for frequently used emojis. This allows you to type a simple keyword that automatically converts into an emoji. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Click on the Apple menu.
  2. Select “System Preferences”.
  3. Select the “Text” tab.
  4. Click on the “+” button below the list of shortcuts.
    • Type your desired keyword in the “Replace” field.
