Method 1: Using the Menu Bar

If you prefer a quick and easy way to turn off the ringer on your Mac, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the volume icon in the menu bar at the top right corner of your screen. It looks like a speaker.

  2. Click on the volume icon.

    A drop-down menu will appear.

  3. Move the slider all the way to the left to decrease the volume until it reaches zero. This will mute all sounds including the ringer.

Method 2: Using System Preferences

If you want more control over your Mac’s sound settings, you can use System Preferences. Here’s how:

  1. Click on the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen and select “System Preferences”.

  2. In the System Preferences window, click on “Sound”.

  3. Select the “Sound Effects” tab.

  4. In this tab, uncheck the box next to “Play sound effects through:”. This will disable all system sounds including the ringer.

Note:

If you only want to turn off specific sounds while keeping other system sounds active, you can adjust individual sound settings in this tab.

Method 3: Using Keyboard Shortcuts

If you prefer using keyboard shortcuts, you can quickly toggle the ringer on and off using the following steps:

  1. Press and hold the “Option” key on your keyboard.

  2. While holding the “Option” key, press the “Volume Up” or “Volume Down” keys. This will instantly mute or unmute your Mac’s ringer.

Method 4: Using Do Not Disturb

If you want to temporarily silence notifications without muting other sounds, you can use the built-in Do Not Disturb feature. Here’s how:

  1. Click on the Notification Center icon in the top right corner of your screen. It looks like three stacked lines.

  2. In the Notification Center, scroll up to reveal additional options.

  3. Click on “Do Not Disturb”.

Note:

In Do Not Disturb settings, you can choose to enable it for a specific duration or indefinitely until manually turned off.

Congratulations! You have successfully learned different methods to turn off the ringer on your Mac. Whether you prefer using menu bar options, system preferences, keyboard shortcuts, or Do Not Disturb mode, you now have full control over managing sound settings according to your preference.
