Mac, Tutorials

Are you tired of the dictionary automatically popping up every time you hover over a word on your Mac? If so, you’re in luck!

In this tutorial, we will walk you through the steps to turn off the dictionary feature on your Mac. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Open System Preferences

To begin, click on the Apple menu at the top left corner of your screen and select “System Preferences” from the drop-down menu. Alternatively, you can use the shortcut by pressing Command + Space and then typing “System Preferences” in Spotlight.

Step 2: Access Language & Region Settings

In the System Preferences window, locate and click on the “Language & Region” icon. This will open a new window with various language and region settings.

Step 3: Open Keyboard Preferences

Within the Language & Region window, click on the “Keyboard Preferences..” button located at the bottom right corner of the window. This will open another window specifically for keyboard settings.

Step 4: Click on ‘Text’ Tab

In the Keyboard preferences window, navigate to the “Text” tab located at the top of the window. This tab controls text-related features such as auto-correct and dictionary.

Step 5: Disable ‘Correct Spelling Automatically’

In this tab, you will find an option labeled “Correct spelling automatically”. To turn off dictionary suggestions, uncheck this box by clicking on it.

  • Bold Text: The option to disable auto-correct may vary slightly depending on your macOS version.
  • Bold Text: Disabling auto-correct will not affect spell-check in other applications like Pages or Microsoft Word.

Step 6: Close System Preferences

Once you have unchecked the “Correct spelling automatically” option, you can close the System Preferences window by clicking on the red “X” in the top left corner.

Step 7: Test It Out!

Congratulations! You have successfully turned off the dictionary feature on your Mac.

To test it out, simply open any text document or web page and hover over a word. You should no longer see the dictionary pop-up.

Now you can work on your Mac without any interruptions from automatic dictionary suggestions. If you ever decide to re-enable this feature, simply follow the same steps and check the “Correct spelling automatically” box again.
