How to Take Screen Capture on Mac

Screen capture, also known as screenshot, is a handy feature that allows you to capture all or part of your Mac’s screen. Whether you want to save important information, share something interesting with others, or troubleshoot a technical issue, knowing how to take a screen capture on your Mac can be incredibly useful.

Capturing the Entire Screen

To capture the entire screen on your Mac:

  • Step 1: Press the Command (⌘), Shift (⇧), and 3 keys simultaneously.
  • Step 2: You will hear a camera shutter sound and see a thumbnail of the captured screen in the bottom-right corner of your screen.
  • Step 3: Click on the thumbnail to open it in Markup, where you can make adjustments and save it or share it immediately.

Capturing a Portion of the Screen

If you only need to capture a specific portion of your screen:

  • Step 1: Press the Command (⌘), Shift (⇧), and 4 keys simultaneously.
  • Step 2: Your cursor will turn into a crosshair pointer.
  • Step 3: Click and drag to select the area you want to capture. As you drag, you’ll see dimensions for the selected area.
  • Step 4: Release the mouse button to capture the selected area.
  • Step 5: The captured screen will appear as a thumbnail in the bottom-right corner of your screen. Click on it to open it in Markup.

Capturing a Window or Menu

To capture a specific window or menu:

  • Step 1: Press the Command (⌘), Shift (⇧), and 4 keys simultaneously.
  • Step 3: Press the Spacebar. The cursor will change to a camera icon.
  • Step 4: Move the camera icon over the window or menu you want to capture. The selected area will be highlighted.
  • Step 5: Click on the highlighted window or menu to capture it.
  • Note:You can press and hold the Option key (⌥) while clicking on a window or menu to exclude its shadow from the captured image.

Troubleshooting Tips

If you’re experiencing issues with screen capture on your Mac, try these troubleshooting tips:

  • If nothing happens when you press the keyboard shortcuts: Go to “System Preferences” > “Keyboard” > “Shortcuts” and make sure that “Screen Shots” is selected in the left sidebar. If not, enable it by checking the box.
  • If the captured screen doesn’t appear as a thumbnail: Check your desktop for a PNG file named “Screen Shot [date] at [time].png”.
  • If you want to change the default save location: Open “Terminal” and enter the following command: defaults write location [path].

    Replace “[path]” with the desired location. For example, to save screen captures on your desktop, use: defaults write com.screencapture location ~/Desktop.
