Mac, Tutorials

In this tutorial, we will learn how to take screenshots on a Mac. Screenshots are an essential tool for capturing and sharing information, whether it’s for work or personal use. With a few simple keyboard shortcuts, you can easily capture the entire screen or just a portion of it.

Capturing the Entire Screen

To capture the entire screen on your Mac, follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Locate the Command (⌘) key on your keyboard.
  • Step 2: Press and hold the Command (⌘) key along with the Shift (⇧) key.
  • Step 3: While holding both keys, press the 3 key. You will hear a camera shutter sound, indicating that the screenshot has been captured.

The screenshot will be saved as a PNG file on your desktop with a filename in the format “Screen Shot [date] at [time].png”. You can now access and share your screenshot as needed.

Capturing a Portion of the Screen

If you only want to capture a specific portion of your screen, follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Locate the Command (⌘), Shift (⇧), and 4 keys on your keyboard.
  • Step 2: Press and hold the Command (⌘), Shift (⇧), and 4 keys simultaneously.
  • Step 3: Your cursor will change to a crosshair. Click and drag to select the area you want to capture.

As you drag, you can hold the Shift (⇧), Option (⌥), or Spacebar keys to adjust the selection.

  • Step 4: Release the mouse button to capture the selected portion of the screen. Again, you will hear a camera shutter sound.

The screenshot will be saved as a PNG file on your desktop with a similar filename format as mentioned earlier.

Capturing a Specific Window

If you want to capture a specific window instead of the entire screen, follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Locate the Command (⌘), Shift (⇧), and 4 keys on your keyboard.
  • Step 2: Press and hold the Command (⌘), Shift (⇧), and 4
  • Step 3:The cursor will change into a crosshair. Press the Spacebar key. The cursor will now change into a camera icon.

Window Screenshot

Note: The cursor will change into a camera icon when it is positioned over a window that can be captured. Move your cursor over the desired window and click once to take a screenshot of that window.

The screenshot will be saved as a PNG file on your desktop with the same filename format as mentioned above.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You now know how to capture screenshots on your Mac.

Whether you need to capture the entire screen, a portion of it, or a specific window, you can easily do so using the built-in screenshot functionality. Screenshots are an invaluable tool for sharing information and troubleshooting, so mastering this skill will undoubtedly come in handy!
