Mac, Tutorials

In this tutorial, we will learn how to reset your Mac using only your keyboard. Resetting your Mac can be helpful in troubleshooting various issues or simply starting fresh. Follow the steps below to reset your Mac with ease:

Step 1: Accessing the Apple Menu

To begin the reset process, press the Command key (⌘) and the Option key simultaneously. While holding down these two keys, press the Escape key (Esc). This will open the Apple menu.

Step 2: Selecting Restart

In the Apple menu, use your keyboard’s arrow keys to navigate to the “Restart..” option. Once you have highlighted it, press the Return or Enter key on your keyboard to select it.

Step 3: Confirming Restart

A dialog box will appear asking for confirmation to restart your Mac. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate to the “Restart” button and press the Return or Enter key to confirm.

Step 4: Resetting Your Mac’s System Management Controller (SMC)

If you are experiencing more severe issues with your Mac, such as a frozen display or unresponsive hardware, resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) can often resolve them. To do this:

  1. Turn off your Mac completely by pressing and holding down the power button for about 10 seconds until it shuts down.

  2. Pause for a few seconds, then press the power button again to turn on your Mac.

Step 5: Resetting Your Mac’s NVRAM or PRAM

If you are still encountering issues with your Mac after resetting the SMC, resetting the NVRAM (non-volatile random-access memory) or PRAM (parameter random-access memory) may help. Here’s how:

  1. Shut down your Mac completely.

  2. Press the power button to turn on your Mac, and immediately press and hold the Command, Option, P, and R keys together.

  3. Continue holding these keys until you hear the startup sound for the second time, and then release them.

Note:

If you have a newer Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 chip), the steps for resetting SMC and NVRAM/PRAM may differ. Please refer to Apple’s official documentation for instructions specific to your model.

By following these steps, you should be able to reset your Mac using only your keyboard. Remember that performing a reset will erase unsaved data, so make sure to back up any important files before proceeding. Resetting can help resolve various issues and provide a fresh start for your Mac’s performance.

I hope this tutorial has been helpful. Happy troubleshooting!
