How to Quick Search on Mac

If you are a Mac user, you might find yourself frequently searching for files, applications, or even specific text within documents. Fortunately, the Mac operating system provides a powerful and efficient search feature that allows you to quickly find what you’re looking for. In this tutorial, we will explore how to perform quick searches on your Mac using various methods.

Spotlight Search

Spotlight is the built-in search tool on Mac that enables you to search for anything on your computer, including files, folders, applications, and even web results. To open Spotlight, simply press Command + Space on your keyboard or click on the magnifying glass icon in the top-right corner of the menu bar.

Once Spotlight is open, you can start typing your search query in the search bar. As you type, Spotlight will instantly display matching results below the search bar. You can use the arrow keys to navigate through the results and press Enter to open a selected item.

Tips for Using Spotlight

  • Search Specific File Types: If you are looking for a specific file type, such as a PDF or an image file, you can refine your search by adding a file type operator. For example, typing “pdf” followed by your search query will only display PDF files that match your query.
  • Math Calculations: You can also use Spotlight as a calculator by typing mathematical expressions directly into the search bar.

    For instance, typing “12*5” will give you an instant result of “60”.

  • Unit Conversions: Need to convert units? Simply type your conversion query in the search bar, such as “10 miles to kilometers”, and Spotlight will provide you with the converted value.

Finder Search

If you prefer a more file-centric approach to searching, you can use the Finder search feature. To access Finder search, open a new Finder window by clicking on the blue smiley face icon in your Dock or pressing Command + N. Then, click on the search bar in the top-right corner of the Finder window.

In the Finder search bar, enter your search query. As you type, Finder will display matching results below the search bar.

You can refine your search further by using criteria such as file name, file type, or date modified. To add criteria to your search, click on the “+” button next to the search bar and select from the available options.

Tips for Using Finder Search

  • Search by File Type: To find files of a specific type, you can use the file type filters available in Finder. Click on the “Kind” dropdown menu in the search bar and select a file type from the list.
  • Create Smart Folders: If you frequently perform similar searches, you can save them as Smart Folders.

    After performing a search, click on “Save” in the top-right corner of the Finder window and choose “Save as Smart Folder”. This will create a dynamic folder that automatically updates with matching results based on your specified criteria.

  • Refine Your Search: When conducting complex searches, you can combine multiple criteria to narrow down your results. For example, searching for “kind:PDF date:today” will show only PDF files modified today.
