How to Partial Screenshot on Mac

In this tutorial, we will learn how to take a partial screenshot on Mac. Sometimes, you may not want to capture the entire screen and only need a specific area. Mac provides a built-in tool called “Capture” that allows you to easily take partial screenshots.

Capturing a Partial Screenshot

To capture a partial screenshot on Mac, follow these steps:

  1. Step 1: Press Command + Shift + 5 on your keyboard. This will open the screenshot toolbar.
  2. Step 2: In the screenshot toolbar, click on the “Capture Selected Portion” button.

    It looks like a square with dotted lines.

  3. Step 3: Your cursor will change to crosshairs. Click and drag the cursor to select the area you want to capture.
  4. Step 4: Release the mouse button to take the partial screenshot.

You can also use additional options available in the screenshot toolbar:

  • Capture Entire Screen: Click on the “Capture Entire Screen” button in the screenshot toolbar to capture the entire screen.
  • Capture Window: Click on the “Capture Window” button in the screenshot toolbar, then click on any window to capture it.
  • Show Floating Thumbnail: If enabled, macOS will show a thumbnail of your screenshot in the bottom-right corner of your screen. Clicking on it will open markup tools for editing.

Saving and Editing Your Partial Screenshot

After taking a partial screenshot, macOS will save it as a file on your desktop. By default, the file name will start with “Screen Shot” followed by the date and time.

You can double-click on the screenshot file to open it in Preview, where you can make additional edits like cropping, rotating, adding text, and more.

Alternatively, you can also use the markup tools available in the floating thumbnail to make quick annotations to your screenshot before saving it.
