Ingredients:

  • 2 cups elbow macaroni

Instructions:

Cooking the Macaroni:

In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add salt. Add the macaroni and cook until al dente according to the package instructions. Drain the cooked macaroni and set it aside.

Making the Cheese Sauce:

In the same pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the flour and stir continuously for about 1 minute until well combined. This mixture is called a roux and will thicken our cheese sauce.

Pour in the milk gradually while stirring constantly. Continue cooking and stirring until the sauce thickens. This usually takes about 5 minutes.

Add in the shredded cheddar cheese, reserving a small amount for topping if desired. Stir until all of the cheese has melted into a smooth sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Mixing it all Together:

Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and gently stir until every noodle is coated with the delicious cheese sauce.

Baking (Optional):

If you prefer a crispy top, transfer the mac and cheese mixture to a baking dish. Sprinkle the reserved shredded cheese on top and then add a layer of bread crumbs for an extra crunch.

Place the dish in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 15-20 minutes or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.

Serving:

Once baked, remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Serve hot and enjoy your homemade Mac & Cheese!
