How to Make Google Docs Dark Mode on Mac

Step 1: Open Google Docs

Step 2: Sign In

If you haven’t signed in to your Google account already, click on the “Sign In” button at the top right corner of the page. Enter your credentials and click “Next” to proceed.

Step 3: Open Settings

Once you are signed in, click on the three horizontal lines (also known as the hamburger icon) at the top left corner of the page. This will open a menu with various options.

  • Note: If you have a small screen or using a mobile device, you may need to click on the three vertical dots instead.

Step 4: Select ‘Settings’

In the menu, locate and click on the “Settings” option. It is usually represented by a gear icon.

Step 5: Enable Dark Mode

In the Settings window, scroll down until you find an option named “Appearance.” Here, you can choose between three different themes – Light, Dark, and System Default.

  • Selecting “Light” will keep the default white background.
  • Selecting “Dark” will enable dark mode permanently.
  • Selecting “System Default” will follow your Mac’s system-wide preferences for appearance.

Note: If you choose the “System Default” option, Google Docs will switch between light and dark mode based on your Mac’s settings.

Step 6: Save Changes

After selecting your preferred theme, scroll down to the bottom of the Settings window and click on the “Save” button to apply the changes.

  • If you change your mind and want to switch back to light mode, simply follow the steps above and select the “Light” theme in Step 5.
