  • 8 ounces elbow macaroni
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • A pinch of black pepper (optional)
  • A pinch of paprika (optional)
  • A pinch of garlic powder (optional)
  • Breadcrumb Topping:

    • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko for added crunch)
    • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Cooking the Macaroni:

  1. In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add salt and cook the macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

    Making the Cheese Sauce:

    1. In a separate saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
    2. Add the flour to the melted butter and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes to make a roux.
    3. Gradually pour in the milk while whisking constantly. Continue cooking and stirring until the mixture thickens.
    4. Add the shredded cheddar cheese to the sauce and stir until fully melted and smooth.
    5. Season with salt, black pepper (if desired), paprika (for a hint of smokiness), and garlic powder (for added flavor). Adjust seasoning according to your taste.

    Assembling and Baking:

    1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
      • Optional: Grease a baking dish with butter or cooking spray for easy cleanup.
    2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce, making sure all the macaroni is coated evenly.
      • Note: At this stage, you can also add any additional ingredients like cooked bacon, diced tomatoes, or sautéed vegetables if desired.
    3. Transfer the macaroni mixture into your prepared baking dish. Spread it out evenly with a spatula or spoon.
    4. Breadcrumb Topping:

      • Mix breadcrumbs and melted butter in a small bowl until well combined.
      • Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top of the macaroni.
    5. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
    6. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

There you have it! A deliciously creamy baked mac and cheese that will satisfy any craving.

Serve it as a main dish or as a side alongside your favorite meats or vegetables. The options are endless!
