Mac, Tutorials

If you’re looking for a way to have your Mac read to you, you’re in luck! In this tutorial, we’ll walk you through the steps to get your Mac to read out loud. Whether you want to listen to an article, an eBook, or any other text on your Mac, this feature can come in handy.

Step 1: Enable the Text-to-Speech Feature

The first thing you need to do is enable the text-to-speech feature on your Mac. Follow these simple steps:

  • Click on the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen.
  • From the drop-down menu, select System Preferences.
  • In the System Preferences window, click on the Accessibility icon.
  • In the left sidebar, scroll down and select Speech.
  • Check the box next to “Speak selected text when the key is pressed.”

Step 2: Assign a Keyboard Shortcut

In this step, we’ll assign a keyboard shortcut that will trigger the text-to-speech feature. Here’s how:

  1. In the Speech settings window, click on the Key Bindings tab.
  2. In the Key Bindings tab, click on the Add New Key Binding button (the “+” sign).
  3. A new window will appear. Click inside the field labeled “Type Key Sequence“.
  4. Type your desired keyboard shortcut.
    • For example, you can use “Option + S” as your shortcut.
  5. Click on the “OK” button to save your keyboard shortcut.

Step 3: Test it Out!

Now that you have enabled the text-to-speech feature and assigned a keyboard shortcut, it’s time to put it to the test. Here’s how:

  1. Select any text on your Mac that you want to be read out loud.
  2. Press the keyboard shortcut you assigned in Step 2.
  3. Your Mac will start reading the selected text out loud!

Tips:

  • If you want to change the voice, go back to the Speech settings window, click on the “System Voice” dropdown menu, and select a different voice from the options available.
    • Note: Additional voices may need to be downloaded from Apple if they are not already installed on your Mac.
  • If you want more control over the speed of the reading, adjust the “Speaking Rate” slider in the Speech settings window. Moving it to the right will make the voice speak faster, while moving it to the left will make it speak slower.

Congratulations! You have successfully set up your Mac to read to you.

Whether you want to listen to long articles or simply give your eyes a break, this feature can be a great addition to your Mac experience. Enjoy!
