Whether you want to save a funny moment from a video, show off your gaming skills, or document an error message for tech support, taking a screenshot is the way to go. In this tutorial, we’ll walk you through the different methods of capturing a screenshot on your Mac.

Capturing the Entire Screen

If you want to capture everything that’s currently displayed on your screen, there’s a simple keyboard shortcut you can use:

Step 1: Press the Command (⌘) + Shift (⇧) + 3 keys simultaneously.

Step 2: You will hear a camera shutter sound, indicating that the screenshot has been taken.

Note: By default, the screenshot will be saved as a PNG file on your desktop with the filename “Screen Shot [date] at [time].png”.

Capturing a Selected Portion of the Screen

If you only need to capture a specific portion of your screen, you can use this method:

Step 1: Press the Command (⌘) + Shift (⇧) + 4 keys simultaneously. Your cursor will change into crosshairs.

Note:You can also press and hold the Spacebar, which will allow you to move the selection rectangle around without resizing it.

Note:If you press and hold the Option (⌥) key, the crosshairs will change into a camera. This allows you to directly capture a window or menu.

Step 2: Click and drag your cursor to select the portion of the screen you want to capture.

Step 3: Release the mouse button or trackpad to take the screenshot.

Note: Similar to capturing the entire screen, the screenshot will be saved as a PNG file on your desktop with the filename “Screen Shot [date] at [time].

Capturing a Specific Window

If you want to capture only a specific window, such as an application or browser window, follow these steps:

Step 1: Press the Command (⌘) + Shift (⇧) + 4, then press the Spacebar. Your cursor will change into a camera icon.

Note:You can also press and hold the Option (⌥) key before pressing the Spacebar, which will allow you to switch between capturing a window or selecting a portion of the screen.

Note:If you have multiple windows open, move your cursor over each window to highlight it. The highlighted window will be captured when you click on it.

Step 2: Click on the specific window you want to capture.

Note:The screenshot of the selected window will be saved as a PNG file on your desktop with the filename “Screen Shot [date] at [time].
