How to Disable Dictionary on Mac

If you find the Dictionary feature on your Mac distracting or unnecessary, you can easily disable it. The Dictionary app provides definitions, synonyms, and other information about words and phrases across various languages.

However, if you prefer not to use it or want to free up system resources, here are the steps to disable the Dictionary on your Mac.

Step 1: Open System Preferences

To begin, click on the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen and select “System Preferences” from the dropdown menu.

Step 2: Access Language & Region Settings

In the System Preferences window, locate and click on “Language & Region.”

Step 3: Open Keyboard Preferences

Within the Language & Region settings, click on “Keyboard Preferences” located at the bottom right of the window.

Step 4: Disable Automatic Spelling Correction

In the Keyboard preferences window, go to the “Text” tab. Here you will find various text-related settings for your keyboard.

Uncheck the box next to “Correct spelling automatically.” This will prevent automatic spelling correction in apps that support it, including Dictionary.

Step 5: Disable Look Up & Data Detectors

Next, click on “Services” in the left sidebar of the Keyboard preferences window. Scroll down until you see “Look Up.”

Uncheck this option to disable dictionary-based look up when highlighting a word or phrase.

Additionally, if you don’t want words like dates or addresses being detected and linked automatically (Data Detectors), uncheck those options as well.

Step 6: Restart Your Mac

To ensure that the changes take effect, it’s recommended to restart your Mac. Once your Mac restarts, the Dictionary feature will be disabled.

Re-enabling Dictionary on Your Mac

If you ever want to re-enable the Dictionary feature on your Mac, you can follow the same steps outlined above and re-check the appropriate options. Remember to restart your Mac for the changes to take effect.

Disabling the Dictionary on your Mac is a simple process that can help declutter your workflow or free up system resources. By following the steps mentioned above, you can easily turn off this feature and regain control over how you access information on your Mac.
