In this tutorial, we will learn how to delete things on a Mac. Deleting files and folders is a common task that every Mac user should know how to do. Whether you want to clean up your hard drive or remove unwanted files, this guide will show you various methods to delete things on your Mac.

Delete Files and Folders

If you want to delete a file or folder on your Mac, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the File or Folder: Navigate to the location of the file or folder you want to delete. You can find files in Finder, which is the default file manager on macOS.
  2. Select the File or Folder: Click once on the file or folder to select it. If you want to select multiple files or folders, hold down the Command key while clicking on each item.
  3. Move to Trash: Once you have selected the file(s) or folder(s), right-click and choose “Move to Trash” from the context menu.

    Alternatively, you can press Command + Delete keys on your keyboard.

  4. Empty Trash: To permanently delete the item(s), open the Trash by clicking on its icon in the Dock. Then, right-click inside the Trash window and select “Empty Trash” from the context menu. Confirm your action when prompted.

Delete Applications

If you want to uninstall an application from your Mac, follow these steps:

  1. Open Finder: Click on the Finder icon in your Dock or press Command + Spacebar and type “Finder” in Spotlight search.
  2. Navigate to Applications: In Finder, click on “Applications” in the sidebar to access the Applications folder.
  3. Locate the Application: Scroll through the Applications folder to find the application you want to delete. Alternatively, you can use the search bar at the top-right corner of Finder to search for the application by name.
  4. Move to Trash: Once you have located the application, right-click on it and choose “Move to Trash” from the context menu.

    Alternatively, you can drag and drop the application icon onto the Trash icon in your Dock.

  5. Empty Trash: Open the Trash by clicking on its icon in the Dock. Right-click inside the Trash window and select “Empty Trash” from the context menu.

Delete Emails

If you use Apple Mail as your email client, here’s how you can delete emails:

  1. Open Apple Mail: Launch Apple Mail from your Applications folder or click on its icon in your Dock.
  2. Select Emails: In Apple Mail, select one or more emails that you want to delete. You can hold down Command while clicking on multiple emails.
  3. Delete Emails: Right-click on a selected email and choose “Delete” from the context menu. Alternatively, you can press Command + Delete keys on your keyboard.

Note:

The deleted emails are moved to a “Trash” folder within Apple Mail. To permanently delete them, right-click on “Trash” in Apple Mail’s sidebar and choose “Erase Deleted Items” from the context menu.
