Mac, Tutorials

If you are a Mac user, you may have encountered the need to delete multiple downloads at once. Whether it’s to free up storage space or simply to keep your downloads folder tidy, deleting multiple files can be a time-consuming task. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process of deleting multiple downloads on your Mac.

Step 1: Open the Downloads Folder

To begin, locate and open the Downloads folder on your Mac. You can do this by clicking on the Finder icon in your dock and selecting “Downloads” from the sidebar.

Step 2: Sort Downloads

Once you have opened the Downloads folder, you may want to sort the files by date or type to make it easier to identify and select multiple files for deletion. To do this:

  • Date: Click on the “Date Added” column header to sort by date.
  • Type: Click on the “Kind” column header to sort by file type.

Choose whichever sorting option suits your needs best.

Step 3: Select Multiple Files

To select multiple files at once, you can use one of the following methods:

  • Method 1: Select Contiguous Files:
    1. Navigate to the first file you want to delete.
    2. Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard.
    3. Select the last file in the group of files you want to delete.
  • Method 2: Select Non-Contiguous Files:
    1. Navigate to the first file you want to delete.
    2. Hold down the Command key on your keyboard.
    3. Select each additional file you want to delete.

Using these methods, you can easily select multiple files in your Downloads folder.

Step 4: Move Files to Trash

Once you have selected the files you want to delete, simply drag and drop them into the Trash bin located at the end of your dock. Alternatively, you can right-click on the selected files and choose “Move to Trash” from the context menu.

Step 5: Empty Trash

After moving the selected downloads to the Trash, it is important to empty the Trash to permanently delete them from your Mac. To do this:

  • Option 1:
    1. Right-click on the Trash bin icon in your dock.
    2. Select “Empty Trash” from the context menu.
  • Option 2:
    1. Click on the Finder icon in your dock.
    2. In the menu bar at the top of your screen, click on “Finder”.
    3. Select “Empty Trash” from the dropdown menu.

This will permanently remove all files you have moved to the Trash, including your selected downloads.

Tips:

  • Bypassing Trash: If you want to bypass moving files to trash and permanently delete them immediately, hold down the Option key while dragging the files to the Trash bin.
  • Confirmation Prompt: By default, your Mac will ask for confirmation before deleting files from the Trash. To disable this prompt, right-click on the Trash bin icon in your dock, hold down the Option key, and select “Empty Trash” from the context menu.

That’s it! You have successfully learned how to delete multiple downloads on your Mac. By following these steps, you can efficiently manage your downloads folder and keep your Mac organized.
