Are you running out of storage space on your Mac due to a cluttered mailbox? Deleting unnecessary mail storage can help free up valuable disk space. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process of deleting mail storage on your Mac.

Step 1: Open Mail App

To begin, open the Mail app on your Mac. You can find it in the Applications folder or by using Spotlight search.

Step 2: Select Mailbox

Next, select the mailbox that you want to delete from. This could be your inbox, sent items, trash, or any other mailbox.

Note:

Before proceeding with deleting mail storage, make sure to backup any important emails or attachments that you may need in the future.

Step 3: Delete Messages

To delete individual messages, simply select them and press the Delete key on your keyboard. Alternatively, you can right-click on a message and choose Delete from the context menu.

If you want to delete multiple messages at once, hold down the Command key on your keyboard while selecting each message. Once selected, press the Delete key or right-click and choose Delete.

Step 4: Empty Trash

To permanently remove deleted messages and free up storage space, you need to empty your trash mailbox.

  • In the Mail app’s sidebar, locate and click on Trash.
  • In the menu bar at the top of your screen, click on Mailbox.
  • A dropdown menu will appear. Click on Empty Trash.

This action will delete all the messages in your trash mailbox, freeing up additional disk space.

Step 5: Compact Mailboxes

By default, when you delete messages, they are moved to the trash and remain in your mailbox until you manually empty the trash. However, this does not immediately free up disk space on your Mac.

To reclaim the space occupied by deleted messages, you need to compact your mailboxes.

  • In the Mail app’s sidebar, locate and click on a mailbox that you want to compact (e.g., Inbox). Click on Eraser icon next to Erase Deleted Items.

This action will remove any deleted messages from the selected mailbox and free up disk space on your Mac.

Conclusion

By following these steps, you can efficiently delete mail storage on your Mac and free up valuable disk space. Regularly cleaning out your mailbox can help optimize performance and prevent storage issues in the future.

Note: If you use an email service like Gmail or Outlook with IMAP or Exchange protocols, deleting messages from your Mac will also delete them from the server. Make sure to consider this before permanently deleting any messages.

Remember: Always backup important emails or attachments before deleting them permanently.

We hope this tutorial has been helpful. Happy cleaning!
