How to Crop Videos on Mac

Step 1: Launch iMovie

To begin, open the iMovie application on your Mac. If you don’t have it already installed, you can download it from the App Store.

Step 2: Create a New Project

Once iMovie is open, click on “Create New” to start a new project. Give your project a name and choose the appropriate aspect ratio for your video.

Step 3: Import Video

Next, import the video you want to crop into your project. You can do this by clicking on the “Import Media” button and selecting the desired video file from your computer.

Step 4: Add Video to Timeline

Drag and drop the video from the media library onto the timeline at the bottom of the iMovie window.

Step 5: Enter Cropping Mode

Select the video clip in the timeline by clicking on it. Then click on the “Crop to Fill” button located above the preview window. This will enter cropping mode.

Note:

  • Cropping mode allows you to adjust and preview changes before applying them to your video.
  • You can also access cropping mode by right-clicking on your video clip and selecting “Crop to Fill” from the context menu.

Step 6: Crop the Video

Use the cropping handles on the preview window to adjust the frame of your video. You can drag these handles inward or outward to resize the frame according to your preferences. As you make changes, you’ll see a live preview of how your video will look.

Note:

  • You can maintain the aspect ratio of your video by holding down the Shift key while dragging the cropping handles.
  • If you want to change the position of the cropped frame, simply click and drag it within the preview window.

Step 7: Apply and Save

Once you’re satisfied with your cropping adjustments, click on the “Apply” button in the cropping toolbar. This will apply your changes to the video clip.

Note:

If you’re not happy with your changes, you can click on “Reset” in the cropping toolbar to revert back to the original video frame.

Step 8: Export Your Cropped Video

Finally, it’s time to export your cropped video! Click on “File” in the menu bar and select “Share” followed by “File..” Choose your desired export settings and save location, then click on “Next” and “Save”. iMovie will now render and export your cropped video.
