How to Crop a JPG on Mac

Have you ever needed to crop an image on your Mac? Cropping an image allows you to remove unwanted areas or focus on a specific part of the picture. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process of cropping a JPG file using the built-in Preview app on your Mac.

Step 1: Open the Image in Preview

To begin, locate the JPG file you want to crop and double-click it. This action will open the image in Preview, which is the default image viewer on macOS.

Step 2: Select the Crop Tool

Once the image is open, click on Tools in the menu bar at the top of your screen. From the dropdown menu, select Crop. Alternatively, you can use the shortcut Command + K.

Step 3: Adjusting Selection Area

A dashed line with handles will appear around your image. Position your cursor within this selection area and click and drag to adjust it according to your desired crop.

  • To maintain the aspect ratio: Hold down the Shift key while dragging one of the corner handles.
  • To freely adjust: Simply click and drag any handle without holding down any keys.
  • To move: Position your cursor within the selection area (but not directly over a handle) and click and drag.
  • To resize: Click and drag any edge handle to expand or shrink that side of the selection area.

Step 4: Finalize the Crop

Once you are satisfied with the crop, click on Tools again in the menu bar and select Crop from the dropdown menu. Alternatively, you can press Command + K.

Your image will now be cropped according to the selection area you defined. To save your cropped image, go to File in the menu bar and select Save.

You can also use the shortcut Command + S. Choose a location on your Mac to save the new image file, and you’re done!

Tips:

  • Undo: If you made a mistake during cropping, simply press Command + Z, or go to Edit in the menu bar and select Undo Crop.
  • Rotate: If your image needs rotation before cropping, go to Tools, then select either Rotate Left or Rotate Right.
  • Straighten: In case an image needs adjustment for leveling before cropping, go to Tone & Exposure, then select eitherStraighten Left orStraighten Right.
  • Square Crop: If you want a perfect square crop, hold down both Shift + Option keys while dragging one of the corner handles.
  • < u >< b > Aspect Ratio : For precise aspect ratios while cropping,< b > Tools >< b > Adjust Size..
