How to Create Guest Account on Mac

Creating a guest account on your Mac can be a useful way to allow others to use your computer without giving them full access to your personal files and settings. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the steps of creating a guest account on your Mac.

Step 1: Open System Preferences

To begin, click on the Apple menu located in the top-left corner of your screen. From the drop-down menu, select “System Preferences”.

Step 2: Navigate to Users & Groups

In the System Preferences window, locate and click on the “Users & Groups” icon. This will open a new window displaying user account options.

Step 3: Unlock the Padlock

In the bottom-left corner of the Users & Groups window, you will see a padlock icon. Click on it and enter your administrator password when prompted. This will unlock the settings, allowing you to make changes.

Step 4: Add a Guest Account

Once unlocked, click on the “+” button located just below the list of user accounts. A pop-up window will appear with various options for adding new users.

Select Account Type:

  • Standard: This type of account is suitable for most users and provides basic access to applications and files.
  • Administrator: An administrator account has full control over system settings and can make changes that affect all users on the Mac.
  • Managed with Parental Controls: This type of account is suitable for children or users who require additional restrictions set by a parent or guardian.
  • GUEST USER: Select this option to create a guest account that allows temporary access to your Mac.

Step 5: Customize Guest Account Settings

After selecting the “GUEST USER” option, you can customize the settings for the guest account. For example, you can choose whether to allow guests to connect to shared folders on your Mac or enable parental controls for additional restrictions.

Step 6: Create the Guest Account

Click on the “Create User” button to create the guest account. This may take a few moments as macOS sets up the account.

Step 7: Switch to the Guest Account

To switch to the newly created guest account, click on the Apple menu and select “Log Out (your username)”. On the login screen, you will see a “Guest User” option. Click on it to log in as a guest.


The guest account is temporary and does not require a password. All files created or modified by the guest will be deleted once they log out.
