Creating a Folder on Mac Desktop

If you’re new to using a Mac, one of the basic tasks you’ll need to know is how to create a folder on your desktop. Folders are a great way to keep your files organized and easily accessible. In this tutorial, we’ll walk you through the steps to create a folder on your Mac desktop.

Step 1: Go to Your Desktop

The first step is to navigate to your desktop. To do this, click on the desktop background or press the Command + F3 keys simultaneously.

Step 2: Right-click on an Empty Space

Next, right-click (or Ctrl + click) on an empty space on your desktop. This will bring up a contextual menu.

Step 3: Select “New Folder”

In the contextual menu, move your cursor over the “New Folder” option. This will open another submenu with two options – “New Folder” and “New Folder with Selection”. Click on “New Folder”.

  • If you prefer using keyboard shortcuts instead of right-clicking, you can press Shift + Command + N keys simultaneously as well.
  • You can also select an item or group of items before right-clicking and choose “New Folder with Selection” if you want to create a folder that contains those items directly.

Step 4: Name Your Folder

A new folder will appear on your desktop, ready for you to give it a name. Click once on the folder and type in the desired name for your folder. Press Enter to save the name.

Mac allows you to change the folder name at any time by clicking on it once to select, then clicking on it again (not double-clicking) after a short pause. This will enable you to edit the folder name directly.

Step 5: Customize Your Folder

Now that you have created your folder, you can further customize it to suit your preferences. Right-click on the folder and explore the options available in the contextual menu. You can change the folder icon, color tag, add or remove items, and much more.

Congratulations! You have successfully created a folder on your Mac desktop.

Folders provide an excellent way to organize your files and keep your desktop clutter-free. Remember that you can create as many folders as needed and arrange them in a way that makes sense for your workflow. Happy organizing!
