If you’re a Mac user looking to compress a photo, you’ve come to the right place. Whether you want to reduce the size of an image to save storage space or optimize it for web use, macOS provides several built-in options that make the process quick and easy.

Method 1: Using Preview

Preview, the default image viewer on Mac, offers a simple way to compress photos without installing any additional software.

  1. Open the Image in Preview
  2. Locate the photo you want to compress in Finder and double-click on it. The image will open in Preview.

  3. Access the Export Options
  4. In Preview, click on File in the menu bar, then select Export... A new window will appear with export options.

  5. Select a Format
  6. In the export window, choose a format for your compressed image. JPEG is recommended for photographs as it provides good compression while maintaining decent quality.

  7. Adjust Quality and Size
  8. To reduce file size further, adjust the quality slider.

Moving it towards lower values will result in more compression but may affect image clarity. You can also manually set the desired file size by entering a value in kilobytes (KB) or megabytes (MB).

  9. Save Your Compressed Image
  10. Once you’re satisfied with your settings, click on the Save button. Choose a destination folder and provide a name for your compressed photo.

Method 2: Using the Preview Markup Tools

In addition to the export options, Preview offers a handy set of markup tools that allow you to annotate and edit images.

  1. Open the Image in Preview
  2. Launch Preview and open the image you want to compress.

  3. Access the Markup Toolbar
  4. In Preview, click on the Markup Toolbar icon located in the top right corner. This will reveal a set of annotation and editing tools.

  5. Select the Adjust Size Tool
  6. From the Markup Toolbar, click on the Adjust Size tool.

    It resembles two overlapping rectangles.

  7. Set New Dimensions and Resolution
  8. In the Adjust Size window, you can manually enter new dimensions for your image. Additionally, adjusting the resolution can help reduce file size without affecting visual quality significantly.

  9. Save Your Compressed Image
  10. After making necessary adjustments, click on the Save button to save your compressed photo.

Note:

If you want to preserve your original photo while compressing a copy, make sure to duplicate it before following any of these methods. This way, you’ll always have an uncompressed version as a backup.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully learned how to compress photos on your Mac using built-in tools like Preview. Feel free to experiment with different settings and find the perfect balance between file size and image quality that suits your needs.
