Changing your desktop background on a Mac is a simple and fun way to personalize your computer and make it truly yours. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the steps to change your desktop background on a Mac, whether you want to use one of Apple’s pre-installed wallpapers or a photo of your own.

Step 1: Accessing System Preferences

To start, click on the Apple Menu located in the top-left corner of your screen. From the drop-down menu, select “System Preferences”.

Alternatively, you can use the Spotlight Search by pressing Command + Spacebar and typing “System Preferences”. Once you have opened System Preferences, you will see a grid of icons representing various settings. Look for and click on “Desktop & Screen Saver” to continue.

Step 2: Choosing a Desktop Background

In the Desktop & Screen Saver window that appears, you will see two tabs at the top: “Desktop” and “Screen Saver”. Make sure that the “Desktop” tab is selected. Here, you will find several options for changing your desktop background.

Using Apple’s Pre-installed Wallpapers

If you want to use one of Apple’s pre-installed wallpapers as your desktop background, simply click on one of the collections listed in the left sidebar. Each collection contains several wallpaper options. When you find one that catches your eye, click on it to preview it in the main window.

To set it as your desktop background, simply click on the “Set Desktop Picture” button located at the bottom-right corner of the window. You can also choose whether to have it displayed as a static image or change automatically at specific intervals by selecting from the options below.

Using Your Own Photo

If you prefer to use your own photo as your desktop background, click on the “+” button located at the bottom-left corner of the window. This will open a file browser where you can navigate to the location of your desired photo. Select the photo and click on “Choose” to set it as your desktop background.

You can also add multiple photos by selecting them while holding down the Command key. To have your desktop background change automatically, check the box next to “Change picture” and choose your preferred frequency.

Additional Customization Options

Below the wallpaper options, you will find additional customization settings. You can choose to have your desktop picture fill the entire screen, fit it to the screen, stretch it, or tile it. Play around with these options to find what works best for you.

Changing your desktop background is a great way to add some personality and style to your Mac. Whether you choose one of Apple’s pre-installed wallpapers or use your own photo, customizing your desktop background is a quick and easy process that allows you to make your computer truly yours.
