Changing the user picture on your Mac is a simple and fun way to personalize your computer. Whether you want to use a photo of yourself, your favorite pet, or a beautiful landscape, this article will guide you through the process step by step.

Step 1: Open System Preferences

To get started, click on the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen and select “System Preferences” from the drop-down menu. Alternatively, you can use the shortcut by pressing Command + Space and typing “System Preferences” in the Spotlight search bar.

Step 2: Choose Users & Groups

In the System Preferences window, locate and click on the “Users & Groups” icon. It usually features two people’s Silhouettes.

Step 3: Unlock the Settings

If necessary, click on the lock icon at the bottom-left corner of the Users & Groups window to unlock it. You will be prompted to enter your administrator password.

Step 4: Select Your User Account

In the left sidebar of the Users & Groups window, find and click on your user account name. This will highlight your account details in the main pane on the right.

Step 5: Change User Picture

In your user account details, locate and click on your current user picture. It should be a small thumbnail image near your account name.

A pop-up menu will appear with several options:

  • iCloud Photo: If you have iCloud Photos enabled, you can choose a photo from your iCloud library.
  • Camera: Take a new photo using your Mac’s built-in camera.
  • Default: Select from a range of pre-installed user picture options provided by macOS.
  • Choose from Folder: Browse your computer and select a photo saved on your Mac.

Select the option that best suits your preferences. For this tutorial, let’s choose “Default” to explore the pre-installed options.

Step 6: Explore Default Options

A new window will open showing various default user picture options. Scroll through the available choices and click on the one you like to select it as your new user picture. You can also use the scrollbar on the right to see more options.

If you prefer to use your own photo or image file, select the “Choose from Folder” option and navigate to the location where your desired image is saved on your Mac.

Step 7: Confirm Your Selection

Once you have chosen your new user picture, it will be displayed in the Users & Groups window. Take a moment to verify that it looks how you want it to appear throughout macOS.

Note:

If you are using multiple devices with iCloud enabled, changing your user picture on one device will sync across all devices using the same iCloud account.

Step 8: Lock & Close

To prevent any accidental changes, click on the lock icon at the bottom-left corner of the Users & Groups window again to lock it. Your new user picture is now set and ready to go!

Congratulations! You have successfully changed your user picture on Mac. Enjoy seeing your personalized image whenever you log in or access system features!
