Mac, Tutorials

Forgetting your password can be a frustrating experience, especially when it comes to accessing your Mac. However, there’s no need to panic!

With a few simple steps, you can change your password and regain access to your computer. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process of changing your password on a Mac if you’ve forgotten it.

Step 1: Restart Your Mac in Recovery Mode

If you’re unable to log in to your Mac because you’ve forgotten your password, the first step is to restart your computer in Recovery Mode. To do this:

  • Shut down your Mac by clicking on the Apple menu and selecting “Shut Down”.
  • Press and hold the Command (⌘) and R keys simultaneously as you turn on your Mac.
  • Your Mac will then boot into Recovery Mode.

Step 2: Access Terminal

In Recovery Mode, you’ll need to access Terminal, which allows you to make changes to your system. Follow these steps:

  • In the menu bar at the top of the screen, click on “Utilities” and then select “Terminal”.
  • A new Terminal window will open.

Step 3: Reset Your Password

To reset your password using Terminal:

  • Type “resetpassword” (without quotes) in the Terminal window and press Enter.
  • A “Reset Password” window will appear.
  • Select your startup disk from the dropdown menu at the top of the window.
  • Choose the user account for which you want to change the password.
  • Enter a new password and verify it by entering it again.
  • Optionally, you can also add a hint to help you remember your new password in case you forget it again in the future.
  • Click on “Save” to change your password.

Step 4: Restart Your Mac

Once you’ve changed your password, it’s time to restart your Mac:

  • In the menu bar, click on the Apple menu and select “Restart”.
  • Your Mac will now restart with your new password.

Note:

If you’re using FileVault encryption, changing your login password will also update your FileVault encryption password. This ensures that both passwords remain in sync.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully changed your password on your Mac even if you’ve forgotten it.

Remember to keep your new password in a safe place or consider using a password manager to avoid this situation in the future. Stay secure!
