Changing your Mac username can be a necessary step if you want to personalize your computer or if you’ve recently changed your name. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process of changing your Mac username.

Step 1: Create a New User Account

If you want to change your username on macOS, the easiest way is to create a new user account with the desired username. Here’s how:

  • Click on the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen and select “System Preferences”.
  • In the System Preferences window, click on the “Users & Groups” option.
  • Unlock the settings by clicking on the padlock icon in the bottom-left corner and enter your administrator password.
  • Click on the “+” (plus) button below the list of users to add a new user account.
  • Choose an account type (Administrator, Standard, etc.) for the new user and enter a full name and account name for it. Make sure to enter the desired username as the account name.
  • Click on “Create User” to create the new account.

Step 2: Transfer Data from Old Account (Optional)

If you want to transfer data from your old account to the new one, follow these steps:

  • Login to your new user account by restarting your Mac and selecting it from the login screen.
  • In Finder, navigate to “Macintosh HD” > “Users”.
  • You should see both your old and new usernames listed. Open both folders.
  • Copy the contents of your old user folder (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, etc.) to the corresponding folders in your new user account.

Step 3: Delete the Old User Account

After transferring your data (or if you don’t need to transfer any data), you can delete your old user account. Follow these steps:

  • Return to System Preferences by clicking on the Apple menu and selecting “System Preferences”.
  • Click on “Users & Groups” again.
  • In the left column, select your old user account.
  • Click on the “-” (minus) button below the list of users.
  • A confirmation dialog will appear. Choose whether to save or delete the home folder of the deleted user account. If you’ve already transferred all your data to the new account, it’s safe to choose “Delete the home folder”.
  • Click on “Delete User” to remove the old user account from your Mac.

Step 4: Restart Your Mac

To complete the process, restart your Mac by clicking on the Apple menu and selecting “Restart”. Once your Mac restarts, you’ll be able to log in using your new username!
