In this tutorial, we will walk you through the steps to access recovery mode on your Mac using various methods. So let’s dive in!

Method 1: Booting into Recovery Mode using Keyboard Shortcut

One of the quickest ways to access recovery mode is by using a simple keyboard shortcut. Just follow these steps:

  1. Shut down your Mac completely by clicking on the Apple menu and selecting “Shut Down”.
  2. Press and hold the Command (⌘) and R keys simultaneously.
  3. Keep holding the keys until you see the Apple logo or a spinning globe.
  4. You will then be taken to the macOS Utilities window.

Note:

If you have a firmware password set on your Mac, you may be prompted to enter it before accessing recovery mode.

Method 2: Booting into Recovery Mode using Startup Disk

If for some reason the keyboard shortcut doesn’t work, you can still boot into recovery mode using the Startup Disk feature. Here’s how:

  1. Shut down your Mac completely.
  2. Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold the Option (⌥) key.
  3. You will see a list of available startup disks displayed on your screen.
  4. Select the “Recovery HD” option and click on the arrow to boot into recovery mode.

Method 3: Booting into Recovery Mode using macOS Utilities

If your Mac is already turned on and you want to restart it in recovery mode, you can do so using the macOS Utilities. Follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Apple menu and select “Restart..“.
  2. Hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys immediately upon hearing the startup chime.
  3. You will be taken to the macOS Utilities window.

Note:

If you are running an older version of macOS, such as OS X Lion or Mountain Lion, you may need to use a different key combination. Please refer to Apple’s official documentation for the specific key combination for your version of macOS.

Congratulations! You have successfully booted into recovery mode on your Mac. Now you can perform various maintenance tasks or troubleshoot any issues you may be facing with your system.
