In this tutorial, we will guide you on how to backup your Mac photos to an external hard drive. It is always a good idea to have a backup of your precious memories and important files. By following these simple steps, you can ensure that your photos are safe and easily accessible even if something happens to your Mac.

Step 1: Connect the External Hard Drive

The first step is to connect the external hard drive to your Mac. Make sure it is properly connected and recognized by your computer.

Step 2: Open the Photos App

Next, open the Photos app on your Mac. You can find it in the Applications folder or search for it using Spotlight.

Step 3: Select Photos

In the Photos app, select the photos that you want to backup to the external hard drive. You can either select individual photos or choose an entire album.

Note:

If you want to backup all your photos, press Command + A on your keyboard to select all.

Step 4: Export Photos

  1. In the menu bar at the top of the screen, click on File.
  2. In the drop-down menu, hover over Export.
  3. Select Export Unmodified Original for x Photos.., where “x” represents the number of selected photos.
  4. A new window will appear. Choose a location on your external hard drive where you want to save the exported photos.
  5. Click on Export x Originals, where “x” represents the number of selected photos.
  6. The Photos app will start exporting the photos to the specified location on your external hard drive. The time it takes will depend on the number and size of the photos.

Step 5: Verify Backup

Once the export is complete, navigate to the location on your external hard drive where you saved the photos. Open a few random photos to ensure they have been successfully backed up.

Step 6: Safely Eject the External Hard Drive

After verifying the backup, it is important to safely eject the external hard drive from your Mac.

  1. In the Finder, click on File.
  2. Select Eject “External Hard Drive Name”.
  3. Wait for a notification confirming that it is safe to disconnect the external hard drive from your Mac.

Note:

Skipping this step and disconnecting an external hard drive without ejecting it can result in data corruption or loss.

You have now successfully backed up your Mac photos to an external hard drive. It is recommended to periodically repeat this process to ensure you always have an up-to-date backup of your precious memories. Remember, prevention is better than regret!
