How to Airdrop From Mac

Airdrop is a convenient feature on Mac that allows you to wirelessly transfer files between Apple devices. Whether you want to share photos with a friend or send a document to your iPhone, Airdrop makes it incredibly easy. In this tutorial, we’ll guide you through the steps to Airdrop from your Mac.

Step 1: Check Compatibility

Before you start using Airdrop, make sure that your Mac is compatible. Airdrop requires a Mac running OS X Yosemite or later versions. Additionally, both devices must have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on.

Step 2: Enable Airdrop

To use Airdrop, you need to enable it on your Mac. Here’s how:

  1. Click on the Finder icon in your Dock to open a new Finder window.
  2. In the menu bar, click on “Go” and then select “Airdrop”. Alternatively, you can press Command + Shift + R on your keyboard.
  3. Airdrop window will appear showing nearby devices.


If your Mac does not support Airdrop or if it’s not working properly, make sure that both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled in the System Preferences.

Step 3: Adjust Airdrop Settings

Airdrop gives you flexibility in terms of who can send files to your Mac. You can choose to receive files from everyone or only from contacts. Here’s how:

  1. In the Airdrop window, click on “Allow me to be discovered by” and select either “Everyone” or “Contacts Only”.

Step 4: Airdrop Files

Now that you have enabled Airdrop and adjusted the settings, it’s time to transfer files:

  1. Select the file(s) you want to Airdrop. You can choose multiple files by holding down the Command key while clicking on them.
  2. Right-click on the selected file(s) and choose “Share” from the context menu.
  3. In the Share menu, select “Airdrop”.
  4. A list of available devices will appear in a new window.
    • If you are Airdropping to a device in your Contacts,
      1. Select the desired contact from the list.
      2. The recipient will be notified and prompted to accept or decline the file.

      – If you are Airdropping to a device not in your Contacts:
      – Make sure that both devices are within Bluetooth and Wi-Fi range.
      – On the receiving device, tap on “Accept” when prompted.
